I bought a new living room rug this week. I ripped up the carpet a couple of years ago, while having a crisis of the faith, writing wise. I had an agent interested, but not exactly interested in the book I was trying to sell, I was waiting on what was eventually a rejection from Harlequin. I didn’t know what to do next.

So I sat down on the carpet with a mat knife, and the next thing I knew, I had hardwood floors.

But now, I want an area rug. I went to a rug outlet, I found a beautiful mock Oriental, synthetic to repel cat vomit, lovely muted colors to look faux antique, and cheap.

By Kathy Ireland.

Normally, I resist things with a tacked on celebrity name, especially if the celebrity is an ex-swimsuit model who once made a movie so bad it ended up on MST3K.

But I am totally in awe of Kathy Ireland.

I read an article about her somewhere. When she gave up being a supermodel and had to content herself with only being incredibly hot in her spare time, she was looking for a business opportunity.

She decided to become a sock designer.

I figured this had to be the second most useless career, after supermodel, and thought she was going to specialize in argyles with toes, or something.

Turns out, she became an athletic sock designer. White sweat socks in more types than I could imagine.

And I got to thinking about it. It really is the little things in life that make a difference. Your day is ruined if you have to spend it in pantyhose that ride down, or underwear that ride up, or socks that don’t fit.

Designing exactly the right type of sweat socks for different people isn’t exactly taking over for Mother Theresa, but it is performing a pretty substantial service to mankind. She is making the world a more comfortable place.

She branched out from socks to other things, like home decor. And my, cheap-but-expensive-looking living room rug.

I have been forced to revise my opinion of her as total cupcake.

And I really like the rug.
